An Introduction to Occupational Therapy
At its core Occupational Therapy is about enabling people to take part or engage in activities that are important and meaningful to them as an individual. Occupation can therefore mean any activity from cooking for the family, to having a shower, walking the dog or driving to work. As we move through life we can develop illnesses, sustain injuries, endure complex mental health conditions or be restricted in other ways that impact on our ability and choice to engage in the meaningful occupations that bring us joy, purpose, direction and a sense of wellbeing.
Occupational Therapy seeks to understand the individual’s situation through a process of assessment and information gathering that explores 3 main domains to provide a biopsychosocial perspective.
Biology
What is happening medically, and how is this impacting my wellbeing and independence?
Psychology
Are mental health difficulties, low confidence or reduced cognition impacting on my day-to-day activities and ability to socialise and enjoy independence.
Social and Physical Environment
What family support do I have and do my family and friends fully understand my support needs? Does my home environment support my independence and wellbeing? Am I able to get out and about safely and independently?
Treatment approaches can be split mainly into 2 key categories Rehabilitation and Adaptation.
Rehabilitation involves providing professional guidance, tailored rehab plans, supported 1:1 rehab activities and recommendations for assistive equipment. Rehabilitation approaches help the individual on their journey back to full independence or better levels of independence.
Rehabilitation
Adaptation includes providing expert advice on living with long term degenerative conditions or permanent life changing disabilities, such as a leg amputation or neurological diagnosis. Adaptation can look like providing assistive technology and equipment such as walking aids, grab rails, stand aids and helpful gadgets. An adaptive approach can include alternative techniques for completing activities or modifying tasks.
Adaptation
Mixed Treatment Approach
Occupational Therapy can utilise a blend of both Rehabilitation and Adaptation approaches. Occupational Therapy can also include guidance for family on how best to support their loved one to promote independence and avoid injury.
